The following is a directory of FDLE Certified Law Enforcement Academies in Florida listed by county. In order to become a Law Enforcement Officer, whether it's a City Police Officer or a Deputy Sheriff working for the county, you will need to first complete a certified basic recruit police training program commonly referred to as a police academy. These police training programs are also called "basic recruit training programs" or "Law Enforcement Basic" and contain a standardized curriculum set forth by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC). The academies are usually offered during the day but some colleges and training centers offer a night / weekend academy that's longer in duration but convenient for individuals that have day jobs. Some law enforcement agencies in Florida will hire you with a salary while you attend the academy and will pay for your academy uniforms, books and tuition. Other agencies may sponsor you. A sponsorship basically means a promise of being hired once you graduate from the academy and receive a passing score on the Florida State Officer Certification Exam (SOCE). However, these sponsorships vary among agencies and may not cover academy costs. Additionally, many sponsorships are not a 100% guarantee of securing a job upon graduation but may place you in non-paid reserve status until positions become available. Also, it's very common that individuals will sponsor themselves or self-sponsor. This means you would pay your own tuition and expenses during the academy. There are only a few academies in Florida that do not allow self-sponsorship. Whatever route you choose, it's recommended you talk to a recruiter for the agency that interests you to learn more about what they offer. Normally a testing center associated with the Law Enforcement training center is a great place to start asking questions. The testing center will sign you up for the required tests for entering the Police Academy. Tests may include any combination of the following: CJ-BAT, F-BAT, BAT, TABE, drug screening, psychological screening, oral interview, background investigation, driving history check, medical examination, polygraph, Physical Assessment (PAT), and they may even check to see if you have any inappropriate tattoos. Passing these tests are required for entrance to a police academy.
